DAD TO 'WORLD'S LARGEST FAMILY' DIES

Ziona Chana, dad to the 'world's largest family' has died at the age of 76. Chana had 39 wives, 94 children, 33 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

As the leader of the religious Christian sect called Chana pawl, he was allowed to have more than one wife. The sect only allows its male followers to be polygamous, and have about 400 families as followers.

Until his death, the entire family lived together in one house in the Indian state of Mizoram. The house in the village of Baktawng Tlangnuam consists of four floors and has 100 rooms. Its name translates to "the house of the new generation".

With its own school, workshops, playground, areas where livestock are reared and a vegetable garden, the massive house has become a bit of a tourist attraction in the village.

While Chana had his own bedroom in the house to which the wives were summoned when needed, the rest of the family members shared the other 99 rooms.

The Mirror reports that Chana had been feeling unwell and unable to eat in the days leading up to his death at a hospital in Aizawl on Sunday. It is believed that he suffered from hypertension and diabetes.
