DOUG THE POTATO MIGHT BE WORLD’S LARGEST

After not knowing that what could be the world’s largest potato was growing in their garden, a couple in New Zealand said it was “one of nature’s pleasant surprises”.

CNN reports that Colin and Donna Craig-Brown, from Ngahinapouri in New Zealand’s Waikato region, found the tuber growing in their garden when they were getting ready for the spring planting season.

“Had no idea it was growing there, and I don’t know how long he was there, because I was walking over the top of him all last cucumber season.”

The couple named the potato Doug after they had to dig him up. Doug weighed in at 7.9 kilograms, much heavier than the current world-record holder of 4.98 kilograms. The current record is held by a British vegetable grower named Peter Glazebrook.

Doug has been put in the freezer to keep him from drying out, but unfortunately, this has meant that he has lost a kilogram since he was put in there. But the potato is getting treated with the utmost respect as he spends his time in the freezer while waiting to hear from the Guinness Book Of Records officials.

“He’s happy in the freezer. Pull him out every now and then chuck him in the sunshine and let him see the outside world”, Colin told Radio New Zealand’s Jesse Mulligan.
