DRUNK DRIVER CRASHES INTO ROADBLOCK KILLING TWO JMPD OFFICERS

On Monday evening a drunk driver was arrested after crashing into a roadblock on Witkoppen Road in Fourways, Johannesburg, killing two female Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers and injuring two other female officers.

The incident involved multiple vehicles including a Hyundai, BMW and Porsche, resulting in five citizens injured including three in serious. The driver of the Toyota Hilux had blood samples drawn and was taken to the Sandton police station.

Netcare 911 paramedics declared the two officers dead at the scene.

A Netcare 911 statement said, "Three passengers from a stationary vehicle were rescued by the fire department and assessed on scene, one passenger sustained severe injuries and the rest minor to moderate injuries.

"Reports from the scene indicate that a vehicle crashed into parked vehicles at the roadblock, killing two officers and injuring passengers."

JMPD chief David Tembe added, "I don't know what to say anymore when we have to [lose] our own while serving the community, and while we are trying so hard to stop drunken driving and to reduce fatalities... But we will continue to perform our duty and to serve our community."

The investigation continues and various charges are expected to be laid by police.
