ENGLAND WASTES SA IN WORLD CUP OPENER
South Africa had a dismal start to the Women’s Cricket World Cup yesterday as they lost to England in Guwahati.
The match was both countries’ first round match in the tournament.
South Africa only managed to score 69 runs, which meant England only had to reach 70 runs in order to win.
Sinalo Jafta, South Africa’s middle-order batter, was the only person to reach double figures with her 22 runs.
England’s left-arm spinner, Linsey Smith, was her side’s best bowler, taking 3/7 in her four overs.
Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont, England’s opening batters, managed to reach 73 runs between them, winning the game for their country. Jones reached 40 not out and Beaumont reached 18 not out.
South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, said in her post-match interview that the team will hopefully forget what happened during this match and focus on what lies ahead.
“We just need to keep trusting that what we have done in the past is good. We have had good preparation, so we’ll be putting this game behind us and moving forward as fast as we can.
“In tournaments like this, you need to have a short memory of games like this and come in with the right intent (in upcoming matches).”
