INDIA BEATS SRI LANKA IN WORLD CUP OPENER
Not even a shortened number of overs could deter India from winning their first match in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
All-rounder Deepti Sharma used her talent with both the bat and the ball to help lead India to a 59-run victory based on the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Sri Lanka’s bowling attack was fierce, and Harmanpreet Kaur’s side managed to keep India down for 124/6.
Sharma managed to get 53 runs off 53 balls as well as impressive bowling figures of 3/54.
India managed to get 270 runs, but their bowling attack put Sri Lanka under a lot of pressure.
At one stage, Sri Lanka’s partnership between Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama seemed to be the magic their team needed to win. But once that partnership was broken, the Sri Lankan wickets fell one after the other.
The nail-biting opening match took place at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati in front of a record-breaking crowd.
Both countries that participated in the opening match are the co-hosts of this tournament, taking place from 30 September until 2 November.
