GRIQUAS WIN CURRIE CUP
A 55-year Currie Cup drought has been ended! The Griquas have won the Currie Cup after an intense final against the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday.
The Griquas took charge in the second minute with a try by fullback Cameron Hufke. George Whitehead converted to add to the scoreboard.
For most of the first half, the Griquas spent time in the Lions’ 22 metre, but by halftime the score was 14 – 17 in favour of the home team.
Although the Lions were ahead for most of the game, the visitors refused to give up.
The Griquas forwards pack made it possible for centre Mnombo Zwelenedaba to score a try in the 73rd minute. Whitehead converted again and gave the Griquas a 24 – 22 lead.
Lubabalo Dobele kept the spectators on the edge of their seats when he scored a late penalty, which meant the Lions were ahead again.
But, during the final few seconds of stoppage time, the TMO identified an infringement which gave Whitehead another chance to score, which he did.
The penalty from near the halfway line was what led the Griquas to their first Currie Cup win since 1970.
