CAPE TOWN INTRODUCES STUPID RULE BUTTON
Have you ever done something at work and thought, “This is stupid and unnecessary. I can do it faster and easier?”
The City of Cape Town has introduced Stupid Rule buttons to help its employees do their work with less hassle and more ease.
According to a statement released by the City, “city staff now have a red Stupid Rule button on their desktops that they can hit to let us know about any customs, practices, ways of working, or plain stupid rules they have to follow in their daily work that need to change”.
Mayor Gordon Hill-Lewis said the City aims to improve the ease of doing business in Cape Town. With this initiative, the City wants to enhance the general service delivery experience of locals.
If a City employee feels that a self-imposed red tape step is unnecessary, redundant, too bureaucratic, or inflexible to deliver service easily and quickly, they can hit the Stupid Rule button on their desktops.
Every time an employee hits the Stupid Rule button, a report is sent to the relevant directorate’s Executive Director, who then allocates a team to investigate.
“Once this investigation is done, steps will be actioned to either amend, explain or remove the rule. The officials who work within these parameters on a daily basis have first-hand experience of how processes can be improved. We are looking forward to receiving their feedback,” said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
