WALMART COMING TO SA
It’s official, Walmart is coming to South Africa.
The company, which owns Massmart, said it’s part of its commitment to make high-quality, affordable merchandise accessible to even more customers worldwide.
According to Walmart International President and CEO Kath McLay, the South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise. This includes apparel, technology, fresh groceries, and household essentials.
“By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” McLay said.
The first Walmart stores were already under construction, with their opening dates to be announced during October.
In a statement released by Walmart, it said, “the company will share further details about store locations, hiring, and community initiatives in the coming months”.
Not only will Walmart be stocking local supplies, but it also plans to invest in local workforce opportunities, community outreach, and sustainability initiatives from the outset.
The company also plans to help foster economic growth and support local causes.
Walmart owns Makro, Game and Builders Warehouse. At this stage, it’s unclear whether the buildings for any of these brands will be converted to Walmart stores or stay as is.
