GIORGIO ARMANI DIES
The world’s most beloved fashion designer has died. Giorgio Armani was 91.
Known for his sophisticated sense of style, he was one of the most beloved designers in the world. From rich housewives to politicians and celebrities, they all adored him, and they all loved wearing his clothes.
But his life has been hit by tragedy as well. As a young boy, Armani and his friend played with unexploded artillery shells left in the street after World War II. One of the shells suddenly went off. He was severely burned, and his friend was killed.
Armani met Sergio Galeotti in 1966. The two were soon inseparable, and Galeotti even left his own career to work alongside the love of his life. It was a match made in haute couture heaven. Armani would design, and Galeotti would run the business.
They started small but soon became massive with Armani’s approach to the suit. He managed to adapt it in such a way that both men and women wanted to wear it.
Looking back on that time, Armani said. “I realised that they needed a way to dress that was equivalent to that of men. Something that would give them dignity in their work life.”
In the 1980s, Galeotti died from an AIDS related illness. Armani called not being able to save him from dying the biggest regret of his life.
Armani, the fashion house, grew from strength to strength and within only 10 years, Armani became the biggest-selling European designer in the United States.
What followed that was the launch of Armani Jeans and his first perfume, Emporio Armani. Next in line were sunglasses, cosmetics and accessories.
