EKURHULENI TAXI STRIKE ENDS

A settlement has been reached, bringing the Ekurhuleni taxi strike to an end.

Taxi commuters in Germiston, Tembisa, and Katlehong, as well as the surrounding areas, were left stranded on Thursday and Friday as the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) was striking.

According to a spokesperson for Santaco, the strike was in direct response to the Department of Transport impounding 17 taxis earlier in the week for various offences.

After two days of strike, the Gauteng MEC for Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, confirmed that a settlement has been reached between the Department and Santaco.

“What is important to us is to apologise to those who have been inconvenienced by the lack of services since yesterday and this morning.

“And we are happy that we have reached a settlement with the taxi industry in Ekurhuleni that they will resume services this afternoon and make sure that they provide the service,” said Diale-Tlabela.

He also said the Department is working on the issues to ensure that law and order still prevail.

“And importantly to us is to deal [with] the issues that they have raised, and amongst those issues is the issue of how do we make sure that there is law and order within public transport operations in our province.”
