FRANK THE SHEEP BEFRIENDS BABY RHINO
It’s not every day that you hear about a sheep being the hero in the story of an orphaned rhino, but that’s exactly what happened when Frank the sheep was introduced to a baby rhino at Shamwari’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
The rhino calf was orphaned and taken in by the veterinarian at the rehabilitation centre, but he wasn’t recovering as well as they had hoped. The vet suspected loneliness was the cause and recruited a sheep from a neighbouring farm.
That’s when Frank entered the rhino camp. Not only did the rhino calf begin to heal, but he also came out of his shell and played with Frank.
Then a slight misunderstanding created a rift between the two when Frank had to be shorn in the middle of summer. Upon his return, the little rhino didn’t recognise him and ignored him for the first few days.
Soon, the rhino recognised Frank and the pair returned to being friends again. It’s a feel-good story giving hope in the very vicious world of rhino poaching in South Africa.
