SA INTERSECTION NAMED IN WORLD’S WORST

Sometimes crossing the road is way more complicated than just crossing the road. Especially if you have to keep other motorists, pedestrians, traffic lights and multiple lanes in mind.

A survey was recently done to find out which interchange is the worst in the world.

In the survey, done by a UK-based company, people were asked to rate specific interchanges on a scale of 100. The higher the mark, the more stressful the interchange.

Meskel Square Roundabout in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was named the world’s most difficult interchange. It contains no markings or traffic lights. Locals navigate it by using horns, eye contact and a sense of adventure.

Number two on the list went to the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange in Los Angeles, United States. Besides the fact that it’s incredibly big, it’s also very complex with multilayer lanes that allow full access from every approach.

The Arc de Triomphe Roundabout in Paris, France, gained third place. The famous tourist hot spot has 12 converging avenues, and often people try to cross all those lanes for a simple photo op.

With South Africa also facing its fair share of traffic challenges, it’s no wonder one of our local intersections made it onto the list.

Merriman Road & Bosman Road Intersection in Stellenbosch made it to number 33 on the list. Although it’s a very tricky intersection to cross, it’s situated in a very beautiful setting, which hopefully makes up for the stress.
