WORLD’S BIGGEST BRAAI TO SET NEW RECORD
It’s no secret we South Africans love a good braai. We love it so much that we’ve unofficially renamed Heritage Day to National Braai Day.
Now, retailer Big Save is hoping to break the Guinness World Records’ numbers and host the world’s biggest braai.
Loftus Versfeld has been chosen as the venue, and the date is 24 September. Obviously.
Around 2,500 braaiers will come together and handle the same number of tongs across 420 braais. Each braaier will be asked to braai one 200g piece of wors. This means about half a ton of meat will be braaied at the same time.
Dylan Jardim, head of marketing at Big Save, said a braai is more than just meat being cooked.
“The braai holds such important cross-cultural significance that many other countries will never understand. It’s how we celebrate, it’s how we connect, and it’s something we all share regardless of background.”
A Guinness World Record official will fly in from London to officiate the event and ensure all the boxes are ticked.
Jardim says the event is more than just an attempt to beat a world record.
“The world record is the headline, but the real victory will be knowing that the fires we light at Loftus will help put food on tables across South Africa long after the day itself.”
