During the past 48 hours since Sunday, 23 more people have died because of the pandemic.
The latest figures show that a total of 132 Covid related deaths have been counted taking the country’s known national death toll to 94,397.
According to EWN, South Africa also reported 3 197 new infections over the past 24-hour reporting cycle, it works out to a positivity rate of 8.8%.
Out of all the variants identified in South Africa, Omicron has had the least devastating impact on the country with the death toll not as high as the other variants.
Omicron was discovered late last year in South Africa and because of that several countries banned travellers to and from the country because of fear that the new variant would cause havoc in their own countries. Since then most travel bans have been lifted.
So far, the latest vaccination stats indicate that almost 30 million vaccinations have been administered in South Africa so far.
