ICE HOCKEY PLAYER DIES AFTER FREAK ACCIDENT ON ICE
Adam Johnson has died after his throat was slashed by the skate of his opponent.
Johnson, originally from the United States and a National Hockey League (NHL) player was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in the United Kingdom on Saturday.
His opponent in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) match was Matt Petgrave of the Sheffield Steelers.
The traumatic scenes unfolded in front of an 8,000 strong crowd at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield.
During the game, Petgrave bumped into Johnson on the ice while playing and Petgrave’s skate slit Johnson’s throat.
The match was stopped immediately and Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was announced dead soon after his arrival.
Spectators were asked to leave the building due to the medical emergency and the police was called in.
The 29-year-old’s girlfriend who lived in the UK with him and was in attendance on the night, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram.
Ryan Wolfe captioned a photo of them: “My sweet, sweet angel. I’ll miss you forever and love you always.”
Local police have confirmed that an investigation has been opened.
