IRIS APFEL DIES AGE 102
Style icon Iris Apfel has passed away at the age of 102.
The news of the New York-born Iris’s death was announced on her Instagram account.
Iris was at the height of her fame in the 80s and 90s and recently described herself as a “geriatric starlet”.
She was a famous interior designer and for decades, she featured in the front row of several fashion week shows.
Iris’s interior design skills and meticulous eye for detail led to her being in charge of the White House’s interior over nine presidencies.
From 1950 to 1992, Iris and her husband Carl owned Old-World Weavers. The textile business, which the couple built from the ground up, gained a massive following and respect from others in the textile industry.
They both retired from the company in 1992 and sold it.
Wikipedia reports that in 2018, Mattel created a Barbie doll in Iris’s image, making her the oldest person to ever have a Barbie made in her image and the recipient of the highest honour the Barbie brand bestows.
Although the Barbie doll was never for sale, it was showcased in conjunction with the publishing of her book.
Later, Mattel made two more “Styled by Iris Apfel” Barbie dolls that were for sale to the general public.
