APPLE LAUNCHES SPORTS APP
Just when you think Apple couldn’t get any bigger, the tech giant goes and launches a sports app.
Apple Sports is a free app only available on iPhones. It delivers live betting odds, real-time scores, and key statistics for various types of sports.
The app is launched just in time for the United States’ March Madness, basketball’s kick-off of the season.
For now, real-time data for both the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball will be offered. Over time, other leagues will also be offered, including the NFL and MLB.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services said the app was created with the fans in mind.
“We created Apple Sports to give sports fans what they want – an app that delivers incredibly fast access to scores and stats.”
At its launch, the app won’t include advertising and so far it won’t be a platform to stream any of the games. The company will continue to stream games on its Apple TV+ streaming service.
Major sporting events have become something the big tech role players are becoming more interested in with the likes of Amazon buying the rights to exclusively air “Thursday Night Football” in the United States as well as the infamous NFL game played on Black Friday every year.
At this stage, it’s not clear whether the app will be available for download anywhere else other than the United States.
