KALAHARI LODGE FIRE CLAIMS NINE LIVES

What was meant to be a fun holiday for three families from the Witzenberg area in the Western Cape, turned out to be one big nightmare.

Out of the three families, nine people died on Sunday night after the Blinkwater Lodge in the Kalahari they stayed in caught fire. It is still unclear how the fire started.

The lodge is located in the Northern Cape province close to the Kgaligadi Park.

Times Live reports that the fire claimed the lives of the entire Carstens family. Dané Carstens (36) and her sons Magiel (3) and Pierre-Johan (5) all died in the fire, while Hendri (39) died of his injuries at a hospital in Cape Town. Hendri and another one of the dads ran back into the burning lodge to save their kids, but were unable to do so and sustained major injuries because of their heroic act.

Madelein Bauer survived, but her husband Stefan (39) and their daughters Elre (4) and Inge (7) died.

Two of Wilmien Davin’s children aged three and five also died in the fire and her husband Frans is currently fighting for his life in a hospital in Cape Town. Their baby boy Ben survived the fire.
