LEWIS TAKES POLE IN QUALIFYING FOR THE 2020 BRITISH GP

Lewis Hamilton set a new track record to take pole position for Sunday's 2020 British GP at Silverstone.

Saturday's qualifying session at Silverstone for the fourth round of the Formula 1 2020 season saw Lewis Hamilton dominate the leaderboard, setting a time of 1m24.616s, with Valtteri Bottas taking P2 just 0.313s later.

The Mercedes team annihilated its competitors in the top-10 shootout, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen taking P3 more than 1-second off the pace. Charles Leclerc placed his Ferrari fourth ahead of Lando Norris in the McLaren and Lance stroll in the Racing Point.

The final four spots in the top ten were claimed by McLaren's Carlos Saintz, the pair of Renault drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon, with Ferrari's Sebastien Vettel closing up the fifth row of the grid.

Earlier, during qualifying 1, the Haas duo of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean, along with Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen in the Alfa Romeos, and Nicholas Latifi – who spun his Williams – all received the chop.

Then, Qualifying 2 said goodbye to Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat in the AlfaTauri's, along with George Russell in the Williams. The surprise return by Nico Hulkenburg for Racing Point, after Sergio Peres tested positive for Covid-19, saw him claim 13th place. The surprise elimination, though, was Alexander Albon in his Red Bull who could only manage 12th.

Even with a spin in Q2, the session belonged to Hamilton, who has now become the first driver to take pole seven times at his home GP. He also secured his 100th front row start for Mercedes in his 144 races for them and, if he wins tomorrows Britsh GP, it'll be seven years in a row that the pole-sitter has won at Silverstone.
