MEGAN SCOTT IS THE RICHEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD

You might now know her name, but you will definitely know her ex-husband's name, and the company that made both of them the richest man and woman in the world.

Megan Scott was married to Amazon founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, for 25 years until their split in 2019. Their divorce was rumoured to be one of the most expensive of all time.

Scott and Bezos married in 1993, and in 1994 Bezos started Amazon from their garage where Scott was the company's first employee. Amazon started as an online bookstore and has since grown into the world's biggest e-commerce company.

In 2019, the couple got divorced, and rumours did the rounds that it was because of Bezos' affair with former newsreader, Lauren Sanchez.

According to an Indian Express report, Scott received 25% of the couple's Amazon stock. It is equal to a 4% stake in the company, with an estimated value of R636 trillion.

Thanks to Amazon's stock rising drastically this week, Scott became the richest woman in the world on Wednesday, with her ex-husband still holding the position of the richest man in the world.

Scott has written two novels and holds a degree from Ivy League university, Princeton.

It is believed that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a positive effect on Amazon's performance during the first half of 2020, as most countries went into lockdown and people turned to online purchases instead of going to shop at a store.

The second richest woman in the world is French L’Oréal heiress, Francois Bettencourt Meyers, followed by Alice Walton whose dad founded the American chain store Walmart.
