MEXICAN NAVY SHIP CRASHES INTO BROOKLYN BRIDGE
Two people have died and 17 others have been injured after a Mexican navy ship crashed into New York’s Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said two people were left in critical condition.
The ship, named the Cuauthemoc was carrying a massive Mexican flag. It’s maiden voyage took place in 1982 and it’s 90 metres long and 12 metres wide.
The journey formed part of the Mexican navy’s annual even to celebrate the end to the cadets’ training.
In videos posted by eyewitnesses, the ship can be seen scraping the underside of the bridge while shearing the top of its masts. The ship’s masts (45 metres) were too tall to clear under the famous arched bridge.
In videos shared on social media, naval cadets dressed in white uniforms could be seen hanging from the ship’s crossbeams after the crash. It’s believed that no one fell into the water.
According to the New York Police Department, the vessel lost power before crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge.
The National Transportation Safety Board took over the investigation, and the bridge has since been reopened.
