NPA ASKS INTERPOL TO INTERVENE WITH GUPTA ARRESTS
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has requested Interpol's assistance to extradite two of the Gupta brothers.
The extradition request relates to money laundering and fraud charges laid against Rajesh Gupta and Atul Gupta, their wives and their business partners.
EWN reports that the NPA is also seeking the arrest of other suspects outside the country involved in the feasibility study of the Vrede dairy farm in the Free State. Millions of rands were diverted from the farm project, which was intended to uplift poor people in the province.
Three former Free State government officials, as well as a business partner of the Gupta's, were formally charged in Bloemfontein on Thursday. The charges laid against them are fraud and money laundering.
The three former government officials also face a charge of contravening the Public Finance Management Act.
According to the NPA, the modus operandi used in this case appeared to have been replicated in other government departments and projects, so it was critical that the evidence gathered in this matter was presented to the court and a verdict obtained expeditiously, reports EWN.
