Former US President, Barack Obama, recently joked about the outgoing President Donald Trump’s emotional state of letting go of the White House on his appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. Obama joked that Trump could be removed from the White House by Navy SEALs if he refused to leave on Inauguration Day.
Kimmel riffed about what might happen if an unnamed person – clearly Trump – were trying not to be found. Kimmel said to Obama; "You know the White House well. You lived there for eight years. Are there places someone could hide? Like, if, say, they were going to be removed? Are there little cubby holes or anything that you know about?"
Obama laughed and responded to Trump’s ongoing refusal to concede the election to President-elect, Joe Biden; "Well, I think we can always send the Navy SEALs in to dig him out."
Along with Trump’s refusal for the newly elected president to take his place, Trump spread baseless claims of voter fraud and launched legal challenges in battleground states, which the Trump campaign already lost most of.
As Trump continues to argue that he won the election, he has not publicly discussed how far he might go to stay in the White House, seeing that he is only due to remain president until Inauguration Day, on January 20, 2021.
An insider also revealed that federal officials are fuming as their Trump-appointed bosses won’t acknowledge Biden’s win, and that the transition books are left gathering dust on their desks.
In US Presidential history, a president has never had to be forcibly removed from the White House, which means there is no set procedure for doing so.
Government experts and former officials revealed that if Trump refuses to leave that it will fall to the Secret Service. A representative of Biden said, in response to early suggestions that Trump would not cede, that the US government was "perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House".
It was also reported that Biden has been denied access to any transition materials, such as funding, and access to intelligence briefings to government agencies. Biden has even warned that if Trump does not start the transition process, more people could suffer and die from the COVID-19 virus.
Obama further said on Jimmy Kimmel Live that; "I wish the transition was going better. We lose time during these crises. When I came in, we were in the middle of a big crisis: the financial crisis. George W. Bush, he and I had obviously big policy differences, but he’s a good man. He’s a patriot. And he ordered everybody on his team to work seamlessly with us on the transition. Bush could not have been more gracious, could not have been more helpful."
Obama continued to say; "And that actually helped us be able to get a head start on trying to stem what could have been a great depression instead of a great recession."
