PARALYMPICS TRIATHLON POSTPONED DUE TO POOR WATER QUALITY
Organisers of the 2024 Paris Paralympics have announced that the Para-triathlon has been postponed by 24 hours. This is due to the poor water quality in the River Seine.
This means all 11 triathlon races had to be postponed from Sunday to Monday. Initially, the triathlon events were moved to one day instead of taking place over two days because of bad weather.
Now, water tests caused a further postponement.
A similar situation took place during the 2024 Paris Olympics when heavy rain during the first few days of the Summer Games caused the water quality to decrease.
A statement was released by World Triathlon confirming the postponement just five hours before the races were meant to start.
“The latest tests show a decrease in water quality in the river following the rain episodes over the last two days. As a result, the water quality at the competition venue on Sunday, 1 September is not suitable for swimming and above the threshold established by World Triathlon.”
Knowing the concerns of the athletes, the statement also said: “Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes and with these conditions, the Para-triathlon events cannot take place today.”
