PATIENT FALLS TO HIS DEATH AT BLOEMFONTEIN HOSPITAL
A security officer at the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein found a patient lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
The man was a patient at the hospital and was found lying in the corridor
leading to the building’s admissions office.
According to the Free State health
department, it is probing the death of the man. It is believed he fell from the
seventh floor at around 03:30 on Friday morning.
The patient, believed to be a burn victim,
had been transferred from Dr JS Moroka District Hospital to Pelonomi on 17
July.
“The patient had sustained major burns to
his face, neck, right shoulder and left hand.” said the department spokesperson
Mondli Mvambi.
Mvambi added that earlier that evening he did
not show any breathing complications, was not suicidal or confused, and was “fully
conscious and interactive with ward staff”.
“The family were called to the hospital
where a meeting was held with the family to inform them of the incident. The
family accepted what happened and was offered psychosocial support. An
independent investigation is currently underway by the police and forensic teams,”
said Mvambi.
The man’s death is still under
investigation.
