SIMONE BILES WITHDRAWS FROM INDIVIDUAL ALL-AROUND COMPETITION IN TOKYO
Hailed as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the individual all-around competition to focus on her mental health.
This was announced by USA Gymnastics on Wednesday following the 24-year-old's decision to step away from the team competition on Tuesday. They have told reporters that she wants to focus on her mental health.
"Whenever you get in a high stress situation, you kind of freak out. It just sucks when you're fighting with your own head."
A statement published on the Twitter account of USA Gymnastics said that "after further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health".
Biles has said that she will base her decision on whether or not to participate in the Tokyo Olympics one day at a time, and that decision will be taken daily.
CNN reports that she still has the opportunity to compete in other individual events during the remainder of the Games, having qualified for individual finals in each apparatus: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
