SKYPE IS SHUTTING DOWN
After 20 years, Microsoft is shutting down Skype. The company confirmed on X that from May, Skype will “no longer be available”.
During the 2000s, Skype was the go-to platform for internet-based phone and video services.
As part of the closure announcement, Microsoft said that current Skype users can use their login details for Teams in the “coming days.”
Teams is the free alternative included in the Microsoft package.
Microsoft bought Skype 14 years ago for $8.5 billion in cash.
Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365’s collaborative apps and platforms, said in a blog post that Microsoft felt honoured to be part of the Skype journey.
“Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments, and we are honoured to have been part of the journey.”
While many users thought the recent pandemic would mean an increase in Skype users, it seemed as if users chose to turn to its competitors like Zoom, Google Meet, and Cisco Webex.
Even though Microsoft is closing down Skype, it’s hoping that the Skype users will make the automatic move to Teams.
“We’re excited about the new opportunities that Teams bring and are committed to helping you stay connected in new and meaningful ways,” Teper added.
