SPANISH MAN JAILED FOR KILLING AND EATING HIS MOTHER

Alberto Sanchez Gomez has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing his mother and eating her remains.

Named the "Cannibal of Las Ventas", the 28-year-old Spaniard was arrested in 2019 after a friend raised concerns about his mother, Maria Soledad Gomez's welfare. Police showed up at her apartment to find Alberto there with his mother’s body parts scattered around the place.

During his trial, Alberto argued that he was experiencing a psychotic episode when he killed his mother, and that he should be treated as someone with a mental health problem. He told the court that he had strangled his mother after the two of them had an argument. The court rejected his argument.

The BBC reports that after murdering his mother, he then dismembered and ate parts of her body over the following two weeks, feeding some to his dog.

At the time of sentencing, the court also added a further five months to his sentence for the desecration of a corpse.

According to Spanish media, the police had been aware of him as he was known to be violent towards his mother. At the time of the murder, there was a restraining order against him, and he had breached it.
