STUDENT EATS WORLD-FAMOUS BANANA ARTWORK

An art student couldn’t contain his hunger and ate the banana that forms part of a famous work titled Comedian.

The banana stuck to the wall with duct tape sold for a whopping $120,000 at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2019. Two other editions of the special piece were also sold at the same fair.

The artwork has since been on tour and has been displayed inside some of the world’s most visited galleries and museums. The most recent museum where the artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was on display is the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea.

The Museum is currently showing Cattelan’s solo exhibition WE until 16 July.

The student removed the fruit from a wall and ate it. Once finished, he stuck the peel onto the wall again.

According to CNN, a museum official said the student told them he ate the banana because he was hungry.

“It happened suddenly, so no special action was taken. The artist (Cattelan) was informed of the incident but he didn’t have any reaction to it.”

The banana is swapped out every two to three days. It’s not for sale.
