SUCCESS FOR SA DUO BONGANI ZUNGU AND KEAGAN DOLLY IN THE FRENCH LEAGUE CUP
On Wednesday evening both Bongani Zungu and Keagan Dolly were in action, helping their respective clubs safely navigate the Round of 16 in the annual French League Cup.
Zungu got handed his 12th start for Amiens as they played against the Ligue 2 basement dwellers Tours for a spot in the last four of the cup competition at the Stade de la Licorne in Amiens. With the hosts racing to a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Seybou Koita and Emmanuel Bourgard.
Zungu was taken off with 20 minutes left in the game, with his side still two goals to the good, yet despite Tours’ late consolation goal in the 90th minute, Amiens emerged unscathed with a 2-1 win, which sees them advance to the quarter-finals, where French giants Paris Saint-Germain lie in wait.
Dolly returned to the field for Montpellier for the first time in three months, coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute as his side shocked Ligue 1’s second-placed side Olympique Lyon 4-1 at the Stade de la Mosson. The Bafana Bafana winger was delighted on his return to action for just his fifth appearance this season, having been unused over Montpellier’s last 13 matches in all competitions, as he took to social media to express his joy, tweeting "Massive win at home and felt good being on the field."
Kermit Erasmus’s Stade Rennes are also through to the last eight after their penalty shootout victory over Marseille, yet the South African was once again not included in the matchday squad. The quarter-final fixtures are scheduled to take place on either 9 or 10 January 2018.
