THE WEEKND SPARKS CONCERN AFTER BRUISED FACE AT MTV AWARDS
The I can't feel my face singer, The Weeknd, sparked concern in fans when his face appeared bruised and bloody at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 30.
Everyone couldn't help but notice the bruises on the singer's face, and has risen to the concern that the singer might have been in a tragic accident or has stepped in the direction of another person's fist.
It appears that the 30-year-old singer was sporting the jarring look as a reference to his short film, After Hours, and music video, Blinding Lights, as he was wearing the same makeup, red suit and black gloves.
The singer was nominated for six VMAs, and performed during the show where he opened the event with an outdoor performance of Blinding Lights that featured fireworks and a helicopter following him around the New York City stage.
The Weeknd won the award for the Best R&B Video, Cinematography, Editing, Direction, Video and Artist, and as he accepted the award he took a moment to bring attention to the Black Lives Matter movement.
"It's really hard for me to celebrate right now and enjoy this moment, so, I’m just going to say, justice for Jacob Blake and justice for Breonna Taylor," he said on stage.
The Starboy singer has been seen wearing the bloody makeup for months - even on his appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Now some may wonder how the bruised face is related to his song Blinding Lights.
In the music video, the artist is seen getting bloody after being beaten up by bouncers and driving drunk.
"Blinding Lights [is about] how you want to see someone at night, and you're intoxicated, and you're driving to this person and you're just blinded by streetlights. But nothing could stop you from trying to go see that person, because you're so lonely. I don't want to ever promote drunk driving, but that's what the dark undertone is," the singer stated earlier in August.
The music video was released after The Weeknd split from longtime on-and-off girlfriend, Bella Hadid, in August 2019.
