TSHWANE LEFT IN THE DARK AFTER SUB-STATION EXPLOSION

Major parts of the City of Tshwane in Gauteng were left in the dark from 06:00 on Monday.

The power outage affected most of the capital including areas like Pretoria East, the CBD and Centurion. Major traffic delays were reported all over.

Lindela Mashigo from the City of Tshwane told EWN that an isolator near the Nyala substation exploded and caused the whole substation to trip, leaving the whole eastern and southern suburbs of Pretoria without electricity.

While some suburbs have been connected again, Mashigo told Jacaranda FM that no definite time can be allocated towards restoring the entire city's electricity again.

"We will disclose the estimated time of restoration during the course of the day. We believe that will be possible once we have identified the fault."

Meanwhile, reports on social media suggests that a generator that caught ablaze was the reason for smoke at the Parkview Shopping Centre in the eastern suburbs. No official reports have been released on the matter yet.
