WHAT’S THE #FREEBRITNEY MOVEMENT ALL ABOUT?
Fans of American singer, Britney Spears, believe she is being held captive because a 12-year conservatorship has given her father and a lawyer control of her life and no access to her $59-million fortune.
To raise awareness, they have created the hashtag #FreeBritney.
The conservatorship was implemented back in 2008 after the singer showed signs of mental illness and was admitted to a psychiatric unit. It means that Spears has no access to her money or a say in what happens to her personal estate and assets.
Conservatorship is usually implemented for people suffering from Dementia, Alzheimer’s or severe mental illness.
Fans of the 38-year old hitmaker once again raised concern for her well-being when, in 2019, she checked herself into a mental institution.
It is believed that she only has 30% custody of her two children, Sean Preston and Jayden, with Kevin Federline.
According to the Daily Mail, the initial joint custody agreement with her and ex-husband, Federline, with who she was married to for three years, was reduced following rumours of an altercation between her father, Jamie, and someone else, but witnessed by Spears’ oldest son.
Following the incident, Federline laid a restraining order against Spear’s father.
Fans driving the #FreeBritney movement are worried that her father is not giving Britney the freedom to make her own choices or have access to her own finances, assets and even children.
Earlier this year, the conservatorship was extended until at least the 22nd of August 2020.
