WHY WOOLWORTHS WON’T BE SELLING TURKEYS THIS CHRISTMAS

If you’ve fallen in love with the tradition of having turkey for Christmas, then Woolworths might disappoint you this year.

Unfortunately, the premium retailer won’t be selling any turkeys this year and many have questioned why.

A Vegan Facebook group sparked rumours that it might be because the retailer decided to go against it, but Woolworths made it clear that that’s not the reason why during an interview with Food24.

“As there is no turkey industry in South Africa, all our whole frozen turkeys are imported from trusted sources in Europe, who share our commitments to animal welfare, food safety and quality. We have no frozen turkeys this year as we were not able to import frozen turkeys due to outbreaks of avian flu in potential source countries in Europe.”

Food24 has confirmed that both Checkers and Shoprite will in fact be selling turkeys this year.
