WOOLWORTHS NOW ONLY SELLS SUSTAINABLE CHOCOLATE

After 10 years of trying, Woolworths has now managed to reach its 100% sustainable cocoa goal. This means that anything they make that contains chocolate or which carries its name contains only sustainable cocoa.

The sustainable cocoa initiative stretches across all their own-brand bars, milkshakes, cakes and even dairy products like yoghurts.

Business Insider reports that Woolworths has achieved “100% responsibly sourced cocoa in its branded chocolate products”, covering the likes of its popular Chuckles line of various things covered in chocolate, as well as cakes and biscuits, and also products where chocolate may be more incidental such as breakfast cereal.

Global demand for cocoa has been blamed for deforestation as well as the impoverishment of farmers and communities in West Africa.

In a statement, the luxury retailer said that at one stage it felt as if it won’t be able to reach its goal.

“In 2012, that goal was impossible to achieve outright as there simply was not enough responsibly produced cocoa certified by independent programmes”.

International manufacturers have recently expressed their concern over the shortage of responsibly sourced cocoa to use in their production.
