SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP GOOGLE SEARCHES REVEALED

From ‘squid games’ to ‘sassa grants’ and everything in between. Google has revealed the top words and phrases searched by South Africans during 2021.

As a nation, we spent a lot of time searching for ways to register for the Covid-19 vaccine. While we were clearly worried about our health, we were also interested to find out about the hit Netflix series Squid Game and all there was to know about Shona Ferguson following the death of her husband.

News24 reports that the 2021 Year in Search report is based on data from Google Trends, a publicly available tool that displays relative search volume across geographies, time periods, and queries that people want to know about.

With the pandemic reaching its second year, ‘sassa status check’ became the top trending search of the year, followed by Euro2020 and Premier League.


The top trending general searches in South Africa were:

·        Shona Ferguson

·        PSL

·        Pakistan vs South Africa

·        Election results

·        Killer Kau

·        DMX

·        Wimbledon


The top trending local personalities were:

·        Jacob Zuma

·        Mpura

·        Zola7

·        Prince Kaybee

·        Bishop Makuma

·        Percy Tau
