ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION ON SLOVAKIA PRIME MINISTER

A 71-year-old man has been charged with the attempted assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The incident took place in broad daylight on Wednesday in the town of Levice.

Eyewitnesses said random shots were fired in succession in what sounded like fireworks. It was only when the prime minister was removed by security that many onlookers noticed something wasn’t right.

Prime Minister Fico was taken to hospital, and it has been reported that he is in a serious but stable condition after doctors worked through the night to stabilise him.

A representative of the hospital said the prime minister’s condition was “truly very serious” after he was shot in the in the arm and stomach. He is currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Colleagues of the prime minister have described the attack as politically motivated.

The man who has been arrested is believed to have acted alone and that he has a history of participating in anti-government protests.
