ICELAND EVACUATES BLUE LAGOON DUE TO VOLCANIC ERUPTION

Nearby seismic activity close to Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon has caused authorities to evacuate the area.

The Blue Lagoon is popular for its geothermal spa known for its milky-blue warm waters. It’s located just under an hour’s drive from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. It is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions.

The magma’s depth of around four kilometres is an indication that an eruption is likely to take place within a few hours.

Police also evacuated the nearby town of Grindavik. Because of the season, there weren’t a lot of people in the town recently and police said the evacuation is “going well”.

A statement released by Blue Lagoon said that the evacuation is taking place to ensure the safety of the people.

Blue Lagoon will be closed until Sunday when authorities will reassess the situation.

“We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working collaboratively with them to monitor the progression of events.”

This is not the first time that natural occurrences have caused the Blue Lagoon to close. In November 2023, it was closed for an entire week after a massive 1,400 earthquakes were measured in only 24 hours.
