MAN DRIVES DOWN SPANISH STEPS, CAR GETS STUCK
An 80-year-old man says he took a wrong turn and accidentally drove his car down the famous Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy.
Italian media reported that the elderly man drove his car down the famous steps in the early morning of 17 June.
Bystanders recorded the incident, and their disbelief and shock can be heard on the video shared by news agencies and on social media.
The car became stuck, and the man exited the vehicle. He was unharmed.
The police were called, and firefighters had to use a crane to remove the vehicles from the steps.
Local media reported that the elderly man was taken to a local hospital and tested negative for both drug use and alcohol consumption.
Although he had a valid driver’s licence, police said the driver appeared to be in a state of confusion.
The famous tourist attraction was temporarily closed until the car could be removed safely.
USA Today reports that this peculiar moment wasn't the first time a vehicle drove through the historic landmark.
A man from Saudi Arabia was charged with aggravated damage to cultural heritage in 2022. Footage appeared of the man driving his Maserati down the famous steps built between 1723 and 1726.
