PROTEAS WIN WORLD TEST CHAMPIONSHIP

South Africa is the best test cricket team in the world.

Temba Bavuma’s team beat the reigning champions Australia by five wickets on day four at Lord’s in England.

Since South Africa was welcomed back into the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) tournaments in 1992, the Proteas have reached two quarterfinals, 12 semifinals and one final but have never managed to win… Until now.

With their highly unsuccessful history, the Proteas had the clear advantage as they finished play on day three.

Yet, South Africans were still hesitant to celebrate prematurely, even though the Proteas started the fourth day with eight wickets in hand and only needing 69 runs.

Aiden Markram was named player of the match after he managed to get 136 runs off 207 balls.

At the post-match press conference, Bavuma shared his joy and optimism for the future.

“We hope that this is the start of something. There could be more trophies.”

Markram expressed his joy at the team finally losing the ‘chokers’ label.

“It will be great to not have to hear it (the word ‘chokers’) again, that’s for sure… So to have got the job done and to get rid of that is quite a big thing for this team.”
