OUTCRY OVER GREAT WHITE DEATH IN KZN
The government has reassured South Africans that both sharks and people are safe at South African beaches.
This comes after a massive outcry when news broke that a Great White shark was found dead in the shark nets. The shark nets are lifted annually to allow for the sardine run.
The sardine run is a massive influx of sardines off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal every year.
People took to social media to share their frustration over the shark’s death, with one user posting:
“It’s loss isn’t just heartbreaking, it’s infuriating. Great white sharks, like the one killed in KZN, are apex predators. They play a vital role in keeping ocean ecosystems balanced.”
Another user said: “Removing great white sharks throws the food chain out of order, causing ripple effects that harm fish populations, coral reefs, and overall ocean health.”
The South Coast Herald reported that more than 50 sharks trapped in fish nets were released over the weekend. The eThekwini local government closed off its beaches last week to lift the shark nets and allow for the sardine run.
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, reassured the country that it’s still safe to swim while the nets are lifted.
“I understand the significant public discourse and concern on social media. I’d like to assure the public and scientific community and our unwavering commitment to both marine life protection and bather safety.”
