PUBLIC TO VOTE ON NEW VW MODEL

German car manufacturer Volkswagen is about to open a new plant in South Africa and assemble a new SUV there. But what the name of the SUV will be is up to the public to decide.

The new SUV, which will be assembled at the manufacturer’s Kariega plant, will be called one of four names. The names up for voting are:

Tengo: Rich cultural significance in African language and describes qualities like strength, resilience and purpose.

Tavi: A gender-neutral word meaning good or beloved in Latin, and also eight.

Tiva: A word that means nature in Hebrew and is also associated with vitality, life and energy.

Tion: Signifies aesthetic appeal and evokes a sense of movement and change.

The names all fall within Volkswagen’s tradition of naming all their SUVs with a name that starts with the letter T.

On its Facebook page, Volkswagen has welcomed the public to vote for their favourite name.

The SUV will be in pre-production in 2026, and it’s believed the winning name will be disclosed next year as the marketing campaign for the car’s 2027 release is set in motion.
