LEINSTER BEAT BULLS TO BECOME URC CHAMPS
Irish rugby club Leinster have been crowned the United Rugby Championship winners.
Leinster played against an unusual, lacklustre Bulls team from Pretoria at Croke Park in Dublin.
Akker van der Merwe scored the Bulls’ only try, followed by a conversion by Johan Goosen. Those were the only points that the Bulls managed to put on the scoreboard, and only in the second half.
The Irish club dominated right from the start with an early try from Jack Conan. Soon after, Jordie Barrett and Josh van der Flier also scored tries against the visiting South African team.
Leinster have now won nine URC titles. The competition was expanded in 2021 to include clubs from South Africa as well. Since then, the Bulls have been in three finals but have lost all three of them.
With star players like the All Black Barret and Springbok RG Snyman, Leinster was unmatched right from the start.
At the press conference held after the game, Bulls coach and former Springboks coach Jake White praised the Irish club’s performance.
“It was by far the toughest final we’ve had. I’m sure any other team that caught this team today in the URC would have gone through exactly what we went through today.”
