MICHAEL JORDAN’S SNEAKERS SELL FOR R40 MILLION

When a pair of sneakers sell for R40 million, you can only guess they’re not just ordinary pairs of sneakers.

The pair, now officially known as the most valuable sneakers ever sold, was signed by basketball legend Michael Jordan and he also wore the sneakers while he played in the second game of the 1998 NBA Finals.

The Air Jordan 13 Breds, short for black and red, were the final pair of Breds that Jordan wore while playing professional basketball for the Chicago Bulls. The game is known as Jordan’s “Last Dance”.

During that game, he scored 37 points helping to lead his team to a 93 – 88 win over the Utah Jazz.

That was the season when he won his sixth and final NBA Championship. He was also named the Finals Most Valuable Player.

Sotheby’s, the auction house in charge of the auction, said the sneakers were gifted by Jordan to a Jazz ball boy after the game. It’s said that the ball boy found a lost jacket and Jordan wanted to thank him.

Jordan’s sneakers broke the previous world record held by a pair of Kanye West’s Nike Air Yeezy 1s. In 2021, West’s sneakers were sold for R33 million.
