NEW NUMBER PLATE SYSTEM FOR GAUTENG

October is transport month and the end of the month will see the launch of a new numberplate system for Gauteng.

The official launch dates of 23 and 24 October was announced by Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela at the Smarter Mobility Conference held last week.

“As part of our contribution to combatting criminality that threatens order and peace, we are on the cusp of launching a new, secure and tamper-proof number plate system.”

At this stage, details of how the new system will work remains vague, but the idea behind the change is to help combat crime.

Lesiba Mpya, Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport spokesperson, said the system will have a cloud-based database of licence plate numbers and an artificial intelligence built into it.

Recently, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said Gauteng was considering connecting a railway line to Limpopo in the near future.
