45 PEOPLE DIE IN BUSH CRASH
A total of 45 people has died in a bush crash in Limpopo. The only survivor is an eight-year-old girl who was also a passenger.
The survivor is currently being treated in hospital.
The bus was heading from Botswana to Moria for the Easter weekend pilgrimage.
It’s believed the bus veered off a bridge while it was going down a mountain pass and crashed 50 metres below. According to a statement released by the transport ministry, the driver lost control of the vehicle as it was going around a bend before it caught on fire.
Some bodies were burned beyond recognition, but it has been confirmed that all the passengers on board, including the driver, were from Botswana.
In a statement released by the presidency, President Cyril Ramaphosa sent his condolences to Botswana and pledged South Africa’s support.
The eight-year-old girl who survived the crash is currently being treated at an undisclosed hospital in Limpopo.
According to the province’s health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, the girl is in safe hands and being well looked after.
“She is in safe hands with experts looking after her. After the accident, she was immediately taken to the closest hospital to be stabilised, as the law requires. We have now moved her to a larger hospital with all the needed facilities and staff.”
