NY MEDICAL UNIVERSITY GETS $1 BILLION DONATION
Four-year students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York will get free tuition with immediate effect. Come September when the new students enrol, they won’t be required to pay tuition fees for the entirety of their studies.
Ruth Gottesman is a former professor at the College. Last week, she announced that her husband passed away and left her $1 billion to donate as she sees fit. She decided to donate the entire amount to the college.
David ‘Sandy’ Gottesman, Ruth’s late husband, was the brains behind the investment house First Manhattan. He was on the board of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway and passed away in 2022 at the age of 96.
His will was finalised earlier this year.
Gottesman’s donation means that low-income students who attend the university in the Bronx neighbourhood of New York will be able to study medicine without the burden of unaffordable tuition fees.
The massive donation is thought to be the largest donation to a medical university in the history of the United States.
Ruth was the speaker at the announcement and said that she “feels blessed to be given the great privilege of making this gift to such a worthy cause.”
