Move over French cognac lovers, there’s a new favourite in town.
Van Ryn’s 15-year-old potstill brandy was recently awarded the World’s Best Wine Brandy. This wasn’t the first time that this proudly South African distillery was awarded with the prestigious recognition.
The World Drinks Awards take place annually and celebrate the very best in the global drinks industry. The brandies are judged during a blind tasting. The scoring is done according to palate and finish, balance, character, nose, complexity as well as overall quality.
In 2023 Van Ryn’s also won the title, beating competition from Australia, Spain and France. This is the fourth time n five years that this brandy has won.
Although potstill brandy is made in the same very niche production method as Cognac, only brandies made in the southwest region of France can use the name Cognac. It’s similar to sparkling wine and champagne.

“Year-on-year our brandies receive the world’s best accolades, showcasing our commitment to innovation, quality and the art of crafting exceptional brandy, building on our reputation as one of the world’s leading fine brandy houses.”
