TORNADO CAUSE HAVOC IN PRETORIA

After three days of heavy rain, the area of Montana in Pretoria North was hit by a tornado.

Vehicles and buildings were damaged as the wind and heavy rain created havoc.

According to the City of Tshwane’s emergency services department, several buildings in a residential complex in Veda Street suffered major damage.

The complex’s upper floors and roofs suffered the worst amount of damage as external geysers and corrugated iron roof sheets were damaged. The items were also torn off by strong winds which led to various units on the top floors being exposed to the rain.

EMS spokesperson Lindsay Zerlithini Mnguni said the affected residents were evacuated and sheltered temporarily in neighbouring units.

“Our disaster management officials were at the scene doing assessments of the damage and determining how they can assist affected families.”

The entire area of Montana suffered damage due to the tornado as several residents reported it.

“There was significant damage caused by the storm, which uprooted trees and blew away roof sheets on buildings, carports and other structures in the area along Sefako Makgatho Drive.”

Mnguni confirmed that no injuries were reported.
