TYLA BECOMES FIRST AFRICAN WITH 1 BILLION SPOTIFY STREAMS

Pop star Tyla has made the headlines again for all the right reasons.

The Joburg-based worldwide phenomenon has hit 1 billion streams on Spotify with her 2023 single ‘Water’. This makes her the first African solo artist to make it into the exclusive 1 billion streams club.

The song was released on 28 July 2023 and peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

At the 2024 Grammys, “Water” won the inaugural Best African Music Performance Award with more awards following at the Billboard Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards.

In a statement, Spotify said: “This milestone is a testament to her talent, hard work, and the power of music to transcend borders.”

Phiona Okumu, head of music at Spotify in Africa, said they’re “incredibly proud of Tyla’s historic achievement”.

“This milestone is a testament to her talent, hard work, and the power of music to transcend borders. Tyla’s success is an inspiration to aspiring artists across Africa and the world, and we are honoured to have played a part in her journey.”

Other artists in Spotify’s Billion Club include The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, and Harry Styles.
